Let’s review Taco John’s!

The fast food restaurant chain was founded in 1969. They serve Mexican-inspired fast food they call “West-Mex”. Headquartered in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Taco John’s now has 380 restaurants in 22 states, including one in our city of Wichita at 656 S. West St.

Their menu of West-Mex includes tacos, burritos, and their popular potato ole’s which are bite-sized deep-fried potato nuggets coated with a proprietary blend of spices and seasonings.

I asked one employee what I should get and she mentioned that they had a citrus chipotle chicken taco and a jalapeno chicken taco. The taco featured a crispy, all-white meat chicken tender wrapped in a soft, flour tortilla and topped with zesty chipotle lime or spicy jalapeno ranch, crisp shredded lettuce and all-natural cheddar cheese.

I went with each of those tacos, an order of potato ole’s and a spicy chicken and potato griller.

My order didn’t take long at all, and soon I was home with my order.

The best part of my meal was probably the potato ole’s which were similar to tater tots. They didn’t have much seasoning on them and came off rather bland. The sauce packets really helped with the flavor, but they were one of the more lackluster potato ole’s I’ve had from Taco John’s.

Seeing as how that was the best part of my meal, things went south from there. The tacos and grillers were letdowns. The Mexican-inspired fast food they call “West-Mex” wasn’t very inspiring at all. I get it, it’s fast food and not meant to be extra special. But there are some fast food taco joints that put out a good product. In my opinion, Taco John’s isn’t one of them. The food really fell flat.

On the bright side, it’s quick and convenient. I’m sure there are fans of Taco John’s out there, unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me.
